U.S. Secretary of State pays courtesy call on Thai Prime Minister


On 16 November 2011, at Government House, Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State of the United States of America, paid a courtesy call on Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand.

During their meeting, the Thai Prime Minister welcomed Secretary Clinton and expressed her appreciation for the close relations between Thailand and the U.S., while Secretary Clinton also expressed her appreciation for the long alliance relationship between the two countries at all levels. Secretary Clinton also expressed her personal admiration for Prime Minister Yingluck.

The U.S. Secretary of State extended her condolences over the flood situation in Thailand and expressed her sympathies to the Thai Prime Minister who has had conduct relief efforts after taking office only two months ago. This was similar to the situation which happened to President Obama when he firstly took office.

Prime Minister Yingluck expressed appreciation to the U.S. Government for the assistance extended to Thailand and informed the U.S. side of recovery and rehabilitation measures which could be divided into three parallel phases, namely 1) Rescue in the immediate phase, 2) Restore in the short-term phase and included assistance for affected industrial estates and private sectors, and 3) Rebuild in the long-term phase. In this connection, Prime Minister Yingluck reaffirmed that the Thai Government would assist affected foreign investors, including U.S. investors.

The U.S. Secretary of State expressed the U.S.’s readiness to extend additional assistance to Thailand, such as the recovery and rehabilitation of Don Mueang Airport. At present, the USS Lassen with a helicopter is in the Gulf of Thailand ready to extend assistance in this regard.  Furthermore, the U.S. offered assistance in inspecting affected cultural sites and others upon request from the Thai side.

On the economic front, the U.S. side reaffirmed the importance attached to Thailand as a trading partner. On the political front, the U.S. side underscored its support for Thailand's civilian, democratic Government as well as for the country's efforts to promote national reconciliation.

Furthermore, the Thai Prime Minister and the U.S. Secretary of State exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest such as democratic developments in Myanmar and positive developments in Thai-Cambodian relations, on which Secretary Clinton expressed her congratulations.

Lastly, both sides discussed issues to be raised during the bilateral meeting between the Thai Prime Minister and the U.S. President on 19 November 2011 in Bali, which included cooperation at both the bilateral and multilateral levels and humanitarian assistance in disaster relief.
