Prime Minister attended the 14th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit in Bali

On 18 November 2011, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra attended the 14th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) in Bali, Republic of Indonesia.
The main points of the Summit were: (1) the Leaders welcomed the signing of the Agreement Between the Governments of ASEAN and the ROK on Forest Cooperation (AFoCo) which would set a dialogue platform towards the establishment of the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) in the future. Under the said Agreement, the ROK would provide financial support and technological expertise in implementing projects on reforestation and sustainable forest management (2) the ROK will share expertise and experience in water resources management in solving flood problems in ASEAN (3) highlighted the successful outcomes of the 1st Mekong-ROK Ministerial Meeting held on 27-28 October 2011 in Seoul which was attended by Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. The discussion focused on the cooperation to narrow economic and social development gaps (4) other important points included increasing two-ways trade and investment, sharing green technology, developing basic transport infrastructure in ASEAN ,and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Yingluck raised several points during the Summit which are: (1) encouraged the ROK to exchange knowledge and expertise in water resources management to comprehensively solve drought and flood problems in the region (2) indicated Thailand’s readiness to cooperate with the ROK on its ‘Low Carbon Green Growth Initiative’ (3) encouraged the ROK to enhance ASEAN connectivity by support capacity building for personnel and agencies in the areas of customs and logistics in ASEAN (4) promoted people-to-people connectivity, particularly in the area of culture.
The ASEAN-ROK Summit is held annually after the ASEAN Summit and other related Summits with ASEAN dialogue partners to review developments of ASEAN-ROK relations and discuss future direction of ASEAN-ROK relations. In 2010, ROK was the fifth largest trading partner of ASEAN following China, EU, Japan, and the U.S., with trade volume amounting around 74.7 billion USD.
