Asia-Pacific International Model United Nations (APMUN)
Asia-Pacific International MUN (APMUN), jointly organized by ASEAN Regional Center of Excellence on Millennium Development Goals (ARCMDG) and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), is established as the first and unique Regional Model among all the other existing university-level Model United Nations (MUNs) in Asia. It aims to gather students from the five continents offering a higher-level atrium of confrontation and debate between culturally-diverse leaders, with the UN building as backdrop.
APMUN is an exclusive five-day simulation for university/college students hosted annually in Bangkok in collaboration with UN Regional Headquarters and various governmental institutions. For this year APMUN is scheduled to take place from 20-24 September 2012.
At APMUN delegates will gain insight into the workings of the United Nations and the dynamics of international relations by assuming the roles of UN representatives and members of other international bodies and national cabinets, as well as press officers. The Asia-Pacific MUN has a special focus on sustainable development and the MDGs. Participants will have to opportunity to discuss issues that confront world leaders and to draft resolutions in response to global issues.
What is a Model United Nations?
Model United Nationst (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations thai aims to educate particpants about curret events, topics in intermational relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.
The participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation or an NGO in a simulated session of an organ (committee) of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants are assigned a country and take on roles as diplomats representing its interests. Afterwards, students investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop proposed solutions to world problems.
The voting procedures are the same as with the ones respected during the real UN works. In fact, model UNs are run using basic parliamentary procedure. This allows all delegates to be active participants. Therefore, during a conference participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. These skills include public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing.
Bangkok represents an important international platform in which over 25 UN agencies, 140 NGOs, 15 IGOs, and over 80 embassies are operating. Furthermore, Bangkok affirmed its strategic importance being the regional hub for the Asia-Pacific negotiation processes.
A Model UN in Bangkok offers to participating students the unique opportunity to confront with a new culture. The “amazing” charm of Bangkok and all the surrounding areas attracts every year more than 18 million tourists from all over the world.
Bangkok is one of the safest Asian cities for tourists. Walking along its roads, visitors can breathe the antique spirituality that characterizes Bangkok, melted together with the dynamism and the modernity of a metropolis constantly and fast growing.
Bangkok with its wonderful unforgettable culture, spiced smells and bright lights is considered “the city that never sleeps” and it represents a great opportunity for all those who wish to try an unforgettable life experience.
