"Briefing on the Current Situation in Thailand"

Overview
• On 5 February 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a briefing on the "Current Situation in Thailand" by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Major General Titiwat Kamlang-Ek, Military Coordinating Officer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also present.
• The briefing provided an objective assessment of the developments of the current political situation in Thailand, as well as a reassurance to all diplomatic missions and international organizations of the government's capability in maintaining peace and order and conducting its affairs under the rule of law and within the confines of the Constitution.
Movement of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD)
• For the past few months, the UDO have been expanding their base of support through training camps, and have managed to recruit approximately 100,000 people.
• The announcements of protests by the red-shirts are aimed at disrupting the [udlcial process and to discredit the government's ability to maintain law and order in the country.
• The rationale and underlying intentions of the UOO are:
1) To slowdown the process of the judicial system in the ruling of former Prime Minister Thaksin's asset case.
2) To create an internal separation within the armed forces, leading to a coup d'etat.
3) To bring about disruption in the society.
4) To undermine and discredit the government's authority, tarnishing the image of the government, domestically and internationally.
