Political and Economic Situation in Thailand

 Overview

- On 10 February 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a briefing for foreign chambers of commerce in Thailand on the Current Developments of the Political and Economic Situation in Thailand by the Foreign Minister.

- Attended by representatives of 21 foreign chambers of commerce in Thailand, the briefing was aimed at updating the current political and economic situation in Thailand including the recent development of the Map Ta Phut Case, the readiness of the Government in handling the movements of the UDD, the outcome of the Prime Minister's recent trip to participate in the World Economic Forum at Daves and the future direction of the nation's economic policy.

Map Ta Phut Case

- The decision of the Central Administrative Court to temporarily suspend 76 industrial projects in Map Ta Phut industrial estate was based on the section 67 of the 2007 Constitution which stipulates that public hearing process must be conducted for any project which affects the community in the quality of environment, natural resource and health so as to obtain the opinion of the parties concerned.

- The Government has done its utmost, with the involvement of all stakeholders and in compliance with the law, to find mutually acceptable solutions to all parties concerned for the future of the 76 projects in Map Ta Phut. These solutions include setting up a 4-party committee chaired by former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun with a view to setting a clear guideline for investors to follow in accordance with the 2007 Constitution. Moreover, the Govemment has encouraged each firm to appeal the case to the Supreme Administrative Court.

- When acceptable solutions have been reached, the Map Ta Phut case will set a new international standard for environment and health for Thailand as well as to set a more sustainable direction for Thailand's future industrial development.
