Support for Special Needs Children
On Friday 2 October 2009, Ambassador Nopadol Gunavibool attended the official opening of the Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School (RCYPS) and Early Intervention Centre. The Guest of Honour for the event was Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister of Education and Second Minister for Defence. The Honourable Denise Pua, Member of Parliament, was also present. Other guests included supporters and sponsors of the Rainbow Centre Yishun Park from private and government sectors.
Rainbow Centre School, which started in 1995 as Rainbow Centre Balestier School (RCBS), offers similar special educational programmes and services for children with intellectual disability, multiple disabilities and autism spectrum disorder as the Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School. In May 2008, RCBS moved to its new purpose-built premises at 15 Yishun Street 61, Singapore 768548 Tel: (+65) 6482 2592, Fax: (+65) 6482 2593 and was named Rainbow Centre – Yishun Park School (RCYPS). The early intervention shares the same premises and it is named as Rainbow Centre Early Intervention Programme (Yishun Park).
The association between the Royal Thai Embassy and the RCYPS dated back to 2007, when Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn paid a visit to the Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School during her official visit to Singapore. The Princess was interested in educational programmes and services for children with special needs, namely, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.
In 2008 soon after the completion of the new building and the soft opening, Ambassador Nopadol paid a visit to the RCYPS and presented a donation ot Mrs. June Tham, Executive Director of the Rainbow Centre, to buy equipment for the new facilities.
